Oops, maps.me finally went away. It used to be a good app, it worked offline and almost all the screen was map. They gradually cluttered the screen with more and more junk, and now you can't download more than ten regional maps, not enough even for a whole country. It's now useless as an application for, like, viewing maps.

Are there any free apps for viewing OSM offline any more? #openstreetmap

Organic Maps - Oh thank god! Like skipping backwards six versions, to before the stone got into my shoe. I'd skipped it because it seemed to be for hiking. More fool me.

OsmAnd is what I'd already settled on as my next least worst, but "you can download 5 maps for free". Same problem.

Organic Maps is I believe a fork of Maps.me - I haven't been using it for long but it does support downloading maps.

Yep, I got there thanks to @Thomas . Just an amazing feeling after enduring the slow decline of maps.me, @Organic Maps waves their magic wand and everything is The Way It Ought To Be again.

You should really check out @organicmaps then. It's a very actively developed fork of the old maps.me with a privacy focus and as many offline maps as you like. I've been using it for some time now and it's really great

I tried OsmAnd. It says "You can download 6 maps for free", which is the reason I dumped maps.me in the first place. It's also far too willing to interpret my zooms as rotates, which meant I was constantly having to tap the compass icon to reset things to sanity.
