Wait, what? Really?

His iPad shows fields of black and green surrounding Bakhmut. As far as the drone’s electric eye can see, everything up to the horizon is a giant moonscape of black impact holes.

Time and again, new plumes of smoke rise up in the field from fresh impacts.

“Our godawful Starlink just isn’t working the way it should,” the specialist says as he angrily digs into his laptop.

“How am I supposed to work when the internet is so damn slow?”

As simple as that, the Ukrainian military shares the picture from drones with other units via link-only live streams on YouTube.

Can I delete unused items from storage?

I'm behind on releases, I'm still on 2022.06. One thing preventing me upgrading is that I need to make a full backup for upgrading, but my database has blown up in size.

For me, the new storage table is pretty unfamiliar. But it seems to me that there's a lot of unused data there. Everything in storage must be either a photo or an attachment - right? I have 191433 rows in storage. I have 127206 rows in photo, and just one in attach. And it seems that the remaining rows are using 12GB, about half of the space of the whole DB:
MariaDB [friendica]> select count(*), sum(octet_length(storage.data)) from storage left outer join photo on storage.id = photo.`backend-ref` where photo.id is null;
+----------+---------------------------------+
| count(*) | sum(octet_length(storage.data)) |
+----------+---------------------------------+
| 63459 | 13781405163 |
+----------+---------------------------------+

Am I right that I could just delete those rows (except for the single row in attach)?

Woah, I never knew about the /friendica diagnostics page.

I did run dbstructure update when I updated in July. I even copied and pasted the terminal output into my notes so that I can prove it 😛 But I've never heard of postupdate before, that does explain a lot.

Right now when I run dbstructure update it does nothing. When I run postupdate I get this error:
ALTER IGNORE TABLE `gserver` MODIFY `url` varchar(255) NOT NULL DEFAULT '' COMMENT '', MODIFY `nurl` varchar(255) NOT NULL DEFAULT '' COMMENT '', MODIFY `poco` varchar(255) NOT NULL DEFAULT '' COMMENT '', MODIFY `noscrape` varchar(255) NOT NULL DEFAULT '' COMMENT '';

Error 1834 occurred during database update:

Cannot delete rows from table which is parent in a foreign key constraint 'apcontact_ibfk_1' of table 'apcontact'

I can probably try to untangle this myself. Thanks for the hints!

Bot for Friendica/ActivityPub

For running some tests on my test instances, I'd like to have a bot. I'd like a command line that can run on a cron job and which makes a post with some kind of dynamic text content, with the URL of the post on stdout. Ideally also:
  • Have the post include an image
  • Have the post be a reply to another post with a specified URL
  • Option to wait for a new post from a specified user, with the post being a reply to that post
  • Authentication via username/password passed on command line
  • Nicer authentication options available
Does anyone have any experience with / recommendations for such a bot?

It was a true Christmas miracle. Brother was fighting brother, but in one beautiful moment of shared humanity, each soldier dropped their weapon and agreed that at least for one day, they could all tag their posts with #QuoteTweets so that the rest of us could just filter that shit out.

Then I woke up.

I was once baffled to discover that gender-api.com claims to be able to "determine the gender of an email address", a ludicrous claim.

However, thanks to the advanced technology of genders.wtf, I have been able to one-up this feat, and I am proud to announce that we can now gender fediverse instances.

Uncanny. @Effy Elden

oh no! Curious to see how a post like this should be displayed titleless. Probably best to just fallback to some default.

Seems like @Thomas Claburn was asked to write about Apple's app store pricing policy, and while that maybe wasn't the worst thing to happen to him that day, it certainly didn't make anything any better. https://www.theregister.com/2022/12/07/apple_developer_charges_store/

Didn't try vanity searching myself for quite a while, but I must say I'm very pleased that the duckduckgo results are all me (apart from my dead namesake) and give a relatively flattering view of my interests. The google results are much worse. Shame about the swastika, I didn't notice that at the time, but at least it's in a relatively benign orientation.

CAPTCHA

CAPTCHA

This is an actual CAPTCHA I was shown when trying to log into PayPal.

1949767199638dfe19c562f704707153-0.jpg

As an actual human and not a bot, I had no idea how to answer. Is this a joke? (Seems not.) Is it a Magritte-like existential question? (It’s not a bicycle. It’s a drawing of a bicycle. Actually, it’s a photograph of a drawing of a bicycle. No, it’s really a computer image of a photograph of a drawing of a bicycle.) Am I overthinking this? (Definitely.) I stared at the screen, paralyzed, for way too long.

It’s probably the best CAPTCHA I have ever encountered; a computer would have just answered.

(In the end, I I treated the drawing as a real bicycle and selected the appropriate squares…and it seemed to like that.)

People coming from Twitter might wonder why the limit is 500 not 280 chars? The extra space is for two additional sentences, one anticipating the counterpoint, the other acknowledging your point's limitations. Mind you, that might just be the preference of the minority who were here before the #TwitterMigration. And it only applies when you're trying to make a point. #feditips

This seems as good a void as any to scream into. I'm seeing people suggest that we should "let a thousand flowers bloom". No. You let a hundred flowers bloom. The number of flowers is 100.

Also, the Hundred Flowers Campaign was ultimately a crackdown on dissent. A lot of brilliant, devoted, caring people died. So if you're gonna invoke that, please ensure your post is funny.

The Pollsters Seem To Have Had A Good Night

In this late-night installment of the FiveThirtyEight Politics podcast, Nate Silver and Galen Druke put their “Model Talk” hats on and discuss the initial results from the 2022 midterms. As of this writing, we still don’t know which party will control the House or Senate, and we may not know come the morning. But that doesn’t stop us from talking about what we do know: that Republicans didn’t make major gains in the Senate, and that the polls were pretty good this cycle.

Among the many, many fediverse features I am only just now discovering 😁, in the Mastodon followers list, I show up as a small avatar and a big empty rectangle. Is there a way in Friendica to set a background image so that it shows up on other sites?

No doubt. This is probably only priority #73 on my personal list of features I only just discovered I needed. It's just the only one I wasn't sure didn't exist already 🤣

You are standing at the railing, looking down at a lifeboat. It seems really rickety. You think, it's gonna be cold there. Let's be rational about this, that thing is downright dangerous. The ship is going down, sure, but it's not down yet. The lights are on! Now is definitely not the time.

And you're probably right, maybe! The ship will stay sorta afloat a while longer. Perhaps the lifeboat won't leave. Perhaps you can get to the lifeboat at any time. Probably it'll be OK.

Congratulations to NASA on the successful test of their planetary doomsday device! I for one will sleep easier knowing that the human race will not be permitted to survive any serious deviation from ideological correctness.

Recovering disk space in MariaDB

I'm out of disk space again. With MySQL it used to be that I could manually delete rows from the photo table, then rebuild the database and recover the space. It was no fun at all but it worked.

Now that I've moved to mariadb, it seems like "innodb_file_per_table = on" doesn't do anything: all the space is used by a single storage.idb file. I tried deleting half the photos and rebuilding the entire database from a dump, but it didn't seem to help. Now that I no longer have tables in individual files, I can't even tell how much space each table is taking up.

Is there any way to manage this disk space? I'd like to find out which tables are taking up the space, and then after deleting unnecessary data from those, recover the disk space on my filesystem.

!Friendica Support
Unknown parent Friendica Support reshared this.

Matthew Exon
Moving to the filesystem and back sounds like a good idea. I managed to remove my 10,000 photos from the storage table by using a backup, magic™, and a lot of swearing, and after optimising the table recovered 1 of the 12GB it was using. This strongly suggests there's a lot more orphaned crap in there that might get purged in the roundtrip to the filesystem. Thanks for the suggestion!
Unknown parent Friendica Support reshared this.

Matthew Exon
I think I burned through July's sysadminning budget already, so I'm not quite ready to make the switch to the develop branch today 😅 But this is all good to know. In the short term, temporarily switching to filesystem and then back again probably will relieve the immediate pressure. But the new features in develop sound like they're moving in the right direction.

iPhone app?

Is there a favourite iPhone app people are using? I know this has been brought up recently but I can't find the discussion. And I know there's a list of mobile clients, but nothing to suggest any of those are for iPhone. It'd be nice if someone could update that page with a few more details, it's not much to go on right now.

It should but while the node help pages can be edited by anyone through pull requests, the friendi.ca blog has a limited number of editors, so it usually is behind the node documentation.

Twitter connector OAuth failure

On my main installation I've had a twitter connection set up for a long time. Now I'm trying to set up a test install with a test twitter account. When I try to connect my test friendica account to my test twitter account, I get "Invalid Twitter info". But also, the interface for setting up "apps" on Twitter's side looks completely different, like a whole different website. Which makes me suspect that whatever API Friendica uses has been killed off, and my existing connection only works because it's been grandfathered in.

So questions:

* Does the twitter addon still work for new connections?
* Am I supposed to be using "OAuth 1.0a" or "OAuth 2.0"?
* How can I troubleshoot the problems with my connection?

!Friendica Support
in reply to Matthew Exon

@utzer It's not the server I'm posting this from, no. It's a new test server on https://test3-friendica.exon.name/.

The point of this, by the way, is that I finally am getting around to fixing mailstream so it correctly sends Twitter posts with attachments. At the moment it sends the text of the tweet but not any images. Since this is better than nothing, I want to have a test server with a test twitter account for development.

Yes, a few years back I missed the memo about mysql no longer being fashionable and never switched over ?. So I should just skip a version? That works!

Yes, this happens to me with most version updates so I'm used to at least one roll-out/roll-back cycle each time. This is actually the second time I've had to roll back and restore for 2021.09. It's just the first time I decided to ask about it.
